A small amount (about 30-40 grams) of fat tissue is taken from the base of the horse's tail. The sampling of fat tissue is done aseptically, normally under light sedation and aided by local anaesthesia. Before the operation, the horse is administered a pain medication and antibiotics.
The fat sample is sent to the Histola laboratory, where the quantity of stem cells required for the treatment is isolated and grown. The laboratory grows the stem cells for about a week, after which the stem cell solution is sent to the veterinarian giving the treatment.
The stem cell solution, is injected into the injury area in ultrasonographic guidance either under general anaesthesia or standing under sedation and local anaesthesia. The treated tendon area is protected with a supportive bandage over the next 24-hour period. The veterinarian gives the owner instructions about rehabilitation.
The ultrasonographic controls of healing are performed regularly (recommended 1, 3 and 6 months after the treatment). Rehabilitation and exercise instructions for the horse are tailored accordingly. The average rehabilitation period is 6-12 months.
