Stem cell technology to help in tendon injuries

Tendon and ligament injuries heal very slowly, and the prognosis is often uncertain. Main reason is the scar tissue formation in the in injury area during natural healing process. As the scar tissue does not tolerate stress in the manner of healthy tissue., the risk of re-injury  is high.

TendoStem® is a treatment based on stem cell technology fro equine tendon and suspensory ligament injuries. Stem cells capable of differentiation are grown from the horse's own fat tissue and then injected to the injury area. This results in cell regeneration into normal tissue where creation of scar tissue is minimized. The result of the treatment is a durable and flexible structure.

Good results with stem cell treatment

Stem cells are cells that are still undifferentiated and can renew themselves. Adult stem cells are multipotent: for example, cells isolated from fat can  differentiate for example into tendon and cartilage cells.

In the TendoStem® treatment, stem cells are taken from the horse's own fat tissue. The fat tissue is rich in  stem cells – approximately 500 times the amount in the bone marrow. Fat sampling is a fast, safe and simple procedure. Additionally stem cells can be cultured faster from fay samples than from bone marrow. When stem cells have been injected into the injured tendon, they start forming new tissue.

The prognosis with stem cell treatment is excellent..

The best end result is achieved if the stem cell treatment is given as soon as possible after the injury after the inflammation stage but before the forming of scar tissue.
